Vineyards
Doren Vineyard, Kenwood, CA
Doren Cabernet Sauvignon was born in our family’s petite 1⁄2 acre vineyard located in Kenwood, California in the heart of the Sonoma Valley (our immediate next door neighbors are Chateau St. Jean and Landmark). The vineyard is organically farmed with minimal human intervention. We farm keeping the ultimate level of respect for our land and use sustainable practices in our vineyard to keep the soils viable now and into the future. Our children play in, and in close proximity to this vineyard, and we enjoy the outdoors of this property surrounded by the vines. Our commitment to keeping the vineyard free from chemicals and anything toxic transcends the crop itself.
Sobre Vista, Glen Ellen, CA
In 2016 our farmer, Ben Calderon offered us grapes from another postage stamp sized vineyard similar to ours that he was farming organically. Ben planted Sobre Vista in 2009 (the same year our son Max was born!) and once we saw the vines, we jumped at the opportunity to purchase this fruit. The 2016 vintage will mark the first vintage of Doren that is not exclusively from our single family vineyard – as our intention will be to blend to two lots together before bottling.
The Love Ranch Vineyard, Coursegold, CA
In 2020 we stumbled across an opportunity to purchase CCOE certified organic Mourvedre and Grenache grapes from The Love Ranch Vineyard. Ben had always wanted to make a Bandol-style rose and decided to craft his first vintage of Josie Rosé. Love Ranch Vineyard is owned by Steve and Diane Love and farmed by Ramos Torres. The vineyard is planted to Rhone varieties to which it is perfectly suited. Love Ranch Vineyard is a true gem and we are quite happy to have access to such great winegrapes, farmed in a way that allows the terroir to express itself to its utmost potential.
This vineyard was established in 1994 in what is now the Madera American Viticultural Area. The Madera AVA covers quite a large area and about 38,000 acres of grapevines. A very small portion of the Madera appellation is in a sub-region locally known as the Madera Foothills. The Madera Foothills are located south of the Yosemite National forest and are characterized by soils and climatic factors that differ from the rest of the region, which sits on the floor of the San Joaquin Valley. This is a relatively undiscovered region and it is producing great winegrapes. Only a few vintners have discovered this promising growing region.
The Love Ranch Vineyard Facts
21 acres on varied slopes.
9 Rhone varieties, mostly on thin soils of granitic schist.
With excellent drainage and retention the day's heat, these soils radiate warmth into the vine’s canopy on cold nights.
1,350 ft elevation, located in Coarsegold, Ca and 35 miles South of Yosemite National Park.
Prevailing winds cool the vineyard and help create wines with intense aromas and flavors.
During late spring and through out the summer months, constant winds of 10mph start around 2pm and well into the evening. This also aids in moderating temperatures of the granite soils on hot days.
